Pilot project
The Welcome to your Library pilot project (2003-4), funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, enabled public libraries in the London boroughs of Brent, Camden, Enfield, Merton and Newham to lead the way in improving access and quality of services for refugees and asylum seekers.
Final report on the pilot project by the Project Co-ordinator. Independent evaluation of the pilot project
Extension of Welcome To Your Library across England
The Paul Hamlyn Foundation generously awarded £250,000 to the LLDA in 2005 to extend the approach taken in the pilot project to five more library services, including three outside London, to draw on experiences in new dispersal areas and share what has been learnt more widely.
Successful bid to the Paul Hamlyn Foundation
Partner public library services
The national public library service partners are the London Borough of Hillingdon, Leicester City Council, Liverpool City Council, London Borough of Southwark and Tyne & Wear (consortium of Newcastle City Council, Metropolitan Borough Councils of Gateshead, North and South Tyneside and Sunderland City Council). The final selection from the 19 library services that applied was based on ensuring the necessary commitment and resources were in place to take work forward, and on achieving a mix of partners at different stages of development in this area of work.

Join the Welcome To Your Library e-list
With The Network, a project partner, we have developed an e-list. Its aims are to help those working in or with libraries to:
Develop awareness of relevant research and policy developments Publicise relevant courses, events and publications Ask questions, request help or provide information on relevant practice issues.
We are experimenting with content and format but currently subscribers generally receive about one e-digest weekly. The list is open to anyone working in or with public libraries and refugee communities or interested in this area of work. To join the list send an e-mail with WTYL e-list in the subject line either to:
Helen Carpenter, Welcome To Your Library Project Coordinator, or to John Vincent, of The Network
